Pokemon cards are collectibles. The IRS taxes them at up to 28%, not 15%.

28%

max tax rate on collectibles

You Owe Tax Without a Form

You don't need a 1099-K to owe taxes. Every card sale, including trades, is a taxable event. Most casual sellers don't realize they're supposed to be filing.

28% Collectibles Rate

Long-term gains on collectibles are taxed at 28%, nearly double the 15% rate for stocks. Most sellers don't realize this until they get a surprise tax bill.

Cost Basis Is a Nightmare

Did you rip a pack, pull a chase card, and grade it? What's your cost basis? Packs, lots, trades, and grading fees all factor in. A spreadsheet won't keep up.

Question 1 of 3
Which best describes your card activity?

How it works

From first sale to CPA-ready report in three steps.

  1. 1

    Log or import your sales

Enter sales manually, or upload a CSV from eBay or TCGPlayer. Include pack openings, lot purchases, trades, and grading fees.

  2. 2

    We match cost basis automatically

PokeROI ties each sale to the right purchase using FIFO (first in, first out) by default. Grading fees and shipping are rolled into the cost basis automatically.

  3. 3

Download your Form 8949 and Schedule D

Export a CPA-ready PDF or CSV. Every line includes acquisition date, sale date, proceeds, cost basis, and gain or loss. The 28% collectibles rate is already flagged.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 1099-K to owe taxes on card sales?

No. The 1099-K is just a reporting form; it doesn't determine whether you owe tax. The federal threshold is $20,000 in payments AND more than 200 transactions on a single platform (some states like Massachusetts and Maryland still require forms at $600). Regardless of whether you receive one, all capital gains from card sales must be reported on your tax return.

Do I owe taxes on card sales?

Generally, yes. If you sold cards for more than you paid, you have a taxable capital gain. Collectibles (including trading cards) held more than a year are taxed at a maximum long-term rate of 28%, compared to 15-20% for stocks. Short-term gains (held one year or less) are taxed as ordinary income.

How does PokeROI calculate my cost basis?

PokeROI supports FIFO (First In, First Out), LIFO (Last In, First Out), and specific identification. FIFO is the default. When you log a purchase, lot buy, pack opening, or trade, we record the cost. Grading fees and shipping are added to the cost basis of that specific card. When you sell, we automatically match it to the right inventory lot and calculate your gain or loss.

Can I import my eBay and TCGPlayer history?

Yes. CSV import from eBay and TCGPlayer is included on every plan, including the free Starter tier. Export your transaction history, upload it in PokeROI, and we'll parse and match it to your inventory automatically. This is especially useful if you're migrating from a spreadsheet.

Is PokeROI a substitute for a tax professional?

No. PokeROI helps you organize your records and generate reports; it's not tax advice. Tax situations vary widely, and collectibles taxation can be complex. We strongly recommend consulting a qualified CPA or tax professional, especially if you have significant gains, losses, or unusual transaction types.
